Chinese AI startup DeepSeek was expected to brief the United Nations Security Council on artificial intelligence risks during a meeting in New York, according to Reuters. The meeting was scheduled for September 23 as world leaders gathered for the annual UN General Assembly.
Reuters reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman planned to brief the meeting, while senior representatives from Anthropic were also expected to participate. DeepSeek and other Chinese AI firms, including Moonshot, had been invited to make statements, although founder Liang Wenfeng was not expected to attend.
The event matters because AI is increasingly being discussed alongside international peace and security rather than only as a technology-sector issue. The Security Council first met on AI risks in 2023, according to Reuters.
Reuters also reported that US and Chinese officials had agreed to continue AI safety talks. The article noted continuing disagreement over whether calls for slowing AI development are about safety or competition between major technology powers.
