Google Cloud has introduced the Gemini agent, a workplace AI system designed to answer questions, handle tasks, create content and write code, according to Reuters. The launch comes as technology companies compete to develop AI agents that can operate with greater autonomy.
Google said the agent can plan work, use tools, connect to business systems and return completed work through documents, email and developer environments. It works inside Google Workspace applications including Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, and can also be used through Microsoft 365 and Slack.
The agent can select the best model for a task and currently uses Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models. Google also allows users to create coworker agents that can act as team members with their own email addresses and restricted access to assigned information.
Financial services and legal versions are already in preview, while versions for government, healthcare and retail are planned. For students and professionals, the development shows how AI agents are increasingly being designed to work across the software people already use.
